Refurbished or remanufactured battery?
In practice, “refurbishing”, “reconditioning”, and “remanufacturing” are often used interchangeably. However, refurbishing and reconditioning differ significantly from remanufacturing as an approach to battery rebuilding.
Refurbishing (or reconditioning) generally refers to the replacement of wear-related parts in the original battery. This can involve changes to the cell type and/or the BMS compared to the original design, which may lead to differences from the original product specifications.
A remanufactured battery is rebuilt entirely to the original factory specifications (or better). All components are retested and, where necessary, replaced—while retaining the original certifications and quality marks.
Lithium battery restoration at Heskon
Heskon offers both approaches to battery rebuilding, depending on customer needs. For fleet owners, refurbishment helps reduce costs and keep vehicles operational, even under intensive use. Battery manufacturers and OEMs typically consider it important to retain the original specifications and certifications.
Depending on the customer’s needs, Heskon can support different approaches to battery restoration, including:
- Design and build of new battery packs for specific applications, with certification or recertification if needed
- Remanufacturing of the original battery, retaining the original battery configuration and OEM components
- For end-of-life batteries, Heskon can build a new battery pack, potentially using a different BMS and/or cell type
