Fleet owners managing large inventories of electric vehicles or machines often run into the same issue after a few years: because the equipment is used in a similar way and goes through a comparable number of charge cycles, there is a risk that the entire fleet starts to show signs of wear or failure at the same time.

In some cases, the original battery is no longer available (in time), which may cause the fleet to come to a standstill. At that point, it can be cost-effective to have end-of-life batteries refurbished back to their original condition.

Active Ants

Refurbishment
Industrial Battery
Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV)

  • E-fulfilment company Active Ants operates warehouses across the EU where robots are primarily responsible for order processing.
  • With large fleets like these and fixed charging cycles, there is a risk that batteries may start failing within the same period, with significant operational impact.
  • For one of the warehouses, Heskon refurbished the entire fleet of AGV batteries used in the fulfilment robots.

Frieslandlease

Refurbishment
Light Vehicle Battery
E-bike

  • On behalf of leasing company Frieslandlease, Heskon carried out battery refurbishments for several thousand e-bikes.
  • For leasing companies with large e-bike fleets, it can be challenging to maintain the state of charge (SoC) when vehicles remain idle for extended periods.
  • If batteries are left unused for too long, there is a risk of deep discharge. This can lead to permanent damage and premature battery failure.
  • Most batteries were fitted with a new battery pack and tested to restore the original capacity (SoH).
